Gord Kaluzniak, HVAC manager for
MNK Mechanical, says one of the purposes
of that project was the phasing
out of the R-22 refrigerant from the old
ventilation system. R-22, which is also
known as chlorodifluoromethane, absorbs,
transports and releases heat as it moves
from a gas to a liquid or vapour state. The
federal government began phasing out the
use of R-22 in manufacturing beginning in
2010, and a complete ban was instituted
on Jan. 1, 2020, because of the damage it
causes to the ozone layer. New units are
now required to use R-410A which is considered
more environmentally friendly.
Building Q-114 was originally used by
the German Army to manufacture targets
for its soldiers. More than 150,000 German
soldiers trained at CFB Shilo between
1974 and 2000 as part of the German Army
Training Establishment that was located at
the base. Canadian civilian employees now
build practice targets in the building.
Kaluzniak, who was involved in the
original construction of Building Q-114
for another company, says most of the
old equipment in the building was
“pretty much worn out” and needed to be
replaced. The work on that building, which
is slated to wrap up in June, includes installing
a new ductless split heating and cooling
system that is essentially one indoor and
one outdoor unit connected by refrigerant
tubing and electrical wiring. MNK also had
to remove smaller air conditioning units
and pump out any remaining R-22, which
then had to be transported to Winnipeg
for disposal.
The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t
directly impacted work on either of the
