a bio-swale to reduce rainwater runoff and clean water before it exits
into the drain,” said Matt.
He says that the swale took a difficult piece of terrain and, using
drainage pipe and some aggregate, Livingstone turned it into useable
green space. “There was a lot of grass remediation where we had to
bring the site from black topsoil to green space.” The overall project,
which included daycare construction, took two years to complete.
Livingstone won the tender in 2018 and work got underway in
Neepawa the following year. “We had two to three persons per crew
and had as many as 10 persons on site some days,” said Matt, noting
that the design called for them to build-in some interesting landscape
features to create a fun space for children to play. “Crews placed trees,
plants and rockwork as well as built a berm that will be great for
tobogganing. We also moved in larger diameter materials to create a
safe and eye-appealing traffic pattern on the site.”
COVID-19 presented a unique set of challenges for Livingstone
Landscaping and its crews. “In Neepawa, we would block off areas so
that our staff did not come into contact with other workers. We also
installed Plexiglass shields in our work trucks that convey crews to
sites,” he said, mentioning that the job near Virden had teams sitting
together in vehicles for 250 kilometres each day.
“We also found some challenges in supply procurement this year
following the pandemic,” said Matt. “Erosion blankets, paving stone
and safety apparel were all in short supply. We had to expand our list
of suppliers.”
The company offers a cohort of some 78 staff members who
together offer years of combined experience. Josh says that they
are fully CORTM-compliant and follow all of a general contractor’s
requirements for safety.
