MEMBER PROFILE
Being a one-stop-shop is another reason
why CW2 has thrived. CW2 was formed
through partnerships that complement
the company’s foundational expertise
such as their partnership with Crane Steel
Structures. Crane Steel is a local, successful
family business that offers design-build and
general contractor services with particular
expertise in metal building systems; it has
earned a reputation for being one of the largest
metal building erectors in Canada.
Curtis also attributes CW2’s success
to its strong ties with the Construction
Association of Rural Manitoba. “CARM is
the hub for all project-related information
in our areas. It makes good business sense to
be a member, not only for the benefit of our
company, but also to contribute to our community,”
he said.
Curtis has sat on CARM’s board of directors
for two years now and has championed
outreach to rural communities to keep
industry members more connected and
engaged. He also advocated for technology
that streamlines the bid process.
Completing Princess Dental
during a pandemic
Since construction is deemed an essential
service, companies were not forced to
close their doors like many other industries
at the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, that doesn’t mean it’s been business
as usual. As the CW2 team works on
the 6,000-square-foot dental facility, they
are taking great care to keep the work environment
a safe one.
For starters, every trade working on the
project is local. It’s CW2’s practice to hire
local trades and source local materials and
equipment, but in the midst of a pandemic,
minimizing travel is also a strategy to slow
the spread of COVID-19.
Under normal circumstances, CW2
would have all the trades onsite at once, but
that number is limited to 10 people at once
(as of this writing), which has presented
logistical challenges.
“It’s a chess game right now. We make
decisions about how many of our people
and how many subtrades can be onsite at
once. We also have to make sure that they’re
completing tasks on time so it doesn’t have a
domino effect on our schedule,” said Curtis.
CW2 also has a number of COVID-19
protocols such as disinfecting tools at the
end of every shift, washing down doorknobs
and high-touch surfaces, and ensuring that
everyone onsite maintains a two-metre
